Adaptive Sports in Alabama

Birmingham's Lakeshore Foundation, an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, offers more than 60 ongoing activities and classes each week for disabled children and adults. Adaptive Aquatics in Shelby County is dedicated to the introduction, teaching and advancement of water skiing for those with physical disabilities. Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama Disability Sports Program. Montgomery's Wheelin' Hawks, a program of Huntington College, offers competition in wheelchair basketball, tennis and other sports for children ages 5—21.

The Montgomery-based Alabama High School Athletic Association operates in tandem with the American Association of adaptedSPORTS™ Programs to develop athletic programs for disabled students in the Alabama school system. Camp ASCCA in Jackson's Gap provides access to the world's largest barrier-free therapeutic recreational facility. Specialized camps and activities are also offered through the Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Birmingham's Camp Smile-A-Mile, Children's Harbor in Alexander City, and Special Olympics Alabama.

Rockin' Rucker's Talent Show Auditions

Aug 10-12, Fort Rucker Lake Party Luau 334.255.9810. Free. Fort Rucker-Landing Ballroom--Fort Rucker will be competing in the 2010 Army Festival of the Arts Competition. Rockin' Rucker's Talent Show will host auditions from 10-12 August 2010 6p.m. - 8p.m. at The Landing Ballroom. It is free to enter and registration can be submitted HERE. Time slots will be given to each act as they sign up. There are 12 different categories in this particular competition: Vocal Soloist, Vocal Duet, Vocal Group, Rap, Dance Individual, Dance Group, Comedian, Instrumental Soloist, Instrumental Group, Vocal & Instrumental Soloist, Vocal & Instrumental Group, and Other. All acts can be up to 5 minutes and must be PG-13 rated. Sound will be provided, but please call number below for more details. A panel of expert judges will select the Top 8 acts that will compete for Cash Prizes on 21 August 2010 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. during Family & MWR's Lake Party Luau at Lake Tholocco on West Beach.
