In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publishing of To Kill a Mockingbird, Wesley Higgins of Birmingham has created a 3,000-piece LEGO® replica of the Old Monroe County Courthouse. The Hollywood set of the 1962 film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird was modeled after the Old Courthouse in Monroeville, Ala., and its courtroom. Higgins’ LEGO® courthouse includes a courtroom, complete with characters from the book, and a LEGO® mockingbird perched on the courthouse roof. The piece took Higgins, a LEGO® hobbyist, designer and collector, and employee of Alabama Power, seven weeks to complete. No glue or paint was used in its making.
The LEGO® replica of the Old Monroe County Courthouse will be displayed in Birmingham at the Galleria LEGO® Store in February and at the downtown Birmingham Regions Bank Tower in March. From April 9 to May 14, Higgins’ piece will accompany the art being exhibited in the Alabama Humanities Foundation’s “TKAM 2010: To Kill a Mockingbird—Awakening America’s Conscience” exhibit at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute David Vann Community Gallery, and at the Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery May 18–21. These two exhibits will feature original works of art by a select group of national and Alabama artists inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird.
Along with the other artwork included in the “TKAM 2010: To Kill a Mockingbird—Awakening America’s Conscience” exhibits, the LEGO® replica of the Old Monroe County Courthouse will be auctioned as part of a special reception and celebration organized by AHF in Montgomery on May 22. Proceeds will benefit AHF’s statewide mission. For information on the TKAM 2010 exhibit, on making a bid or on the May 22 event in Montgomery, contact Paul Lawson, Katie Crawford or Susan Perry of the Alabama Humanities Foundation at (205) 558-3980, or visit ahf.net.
