PERCY SLEDGE TO PERFORM AT AMHOF BANQUET

March 8, 2010

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama Music Hall of Fame executive director David Johnson announced here today that organizers of the March 25 induction banquet and awards show at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center in Montgomery have asked for a repeat performance by Muscle Shoals recording legend Percy Sledge.

Johnson, who has produced records on the Leighton native, said Montgomery fans were enthralled by Sledge’s performance at the 2008 show and demanded that he make a return performance.

Sledge, had the first Gold Record recorded in Muscle Shoals with the ever-popular “When A Man Loves A Woman.” The AMHOF inducted him into its ranks in 1993. In November 2004, Sledge was inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Johnson said Sledge is another in the stellar lineup for the 13th Induction Banquet and awards show will include performances by Eddie Levert (of the O’Jays), the Blind Boys of Alabama, Mac Davis, Jamey Johnson, Bobby Denton, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Travis Wammack, Mac McAnally and Pat Upton.

Levert and Denton were born in Bessemer and Cherokee, respectively. The Blind Boys were formed in Talladega.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section, which originally included several Alabamians, was formed by songwriter/record producer Buddy Buie (formerly of Dothan) as session players for Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. Wammack, a Muscle Shoals guitarist/singer/songwriter, lives near Cherokee.

Davis is a Texan who cut his first successful records in Muscle Shoals. McAnally, a Red Bay native, currently tours with Jimmy Buffet and produces records at his Sheffield studio. Johnson, an Enterprise native who grew up near Montgomery, currently lives and records in Nashville.

Upton, the lead singer for Spiral Starecase and a former member of Rick Nelson’s band, lives in Guntersville.

Tickets for the March 25 event start at $125 and go up to corporate sponsorships. That covers the 5 p.m. pre-show reception, 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. show.  Call 1-800-239-2643 for information.
